Medina County Historical Society

The Medina County Historical Society maintains a museum in the 1886 John Smart House.  This is a fourteen room, Queen Anne style home located just two blocks from Medina’s historic town square.  The first floor of the museum is a living museum comprised of two parlors, a library, dining room and kitchen all decorated in the Victorian style.  Each room is open and includes other special displays on Medina County history.

The second floor includes a Victorian bedroom and child’s room and a large exhibit area which features displays of business, medicine, transportation and military contributions of Medina County.  There is also a life-sized photo mural of the Giants of Seville, a local couple who measured over seven feet tall in the late nineteenth century and were both employed by the Barnum Bailey Circus, along with some of their personal belongings.

The basement includes an extensive collection of Indian artifacts.  A second room in the basement features primitives from the pioneer period of Medina County history.

The John Smart House is located one block north and one block west of Medina’s square at the corner of Friendship and Elmwood Street (206 N. Elmwood).  There is parking behind the museum.

The museum is open on Tuesday from 9am to 5pm March to December.  There are also open houses on the first Sunday of the month from 1pm to 4pm.  Tours may also be arranged by appointment by calling 330.722.1341.  There is a $2.00 fee per person for bus tours with a complimentary pass to bus drivers and tour guides.

Main Street Medina

Main Street Medina is looking forward in 2010 to celebrate its third year of leading the effort for preservation, economic sustainability, and continued evolution of the Historic District as the heart of the community.  Over 100 local businesses and residents have become members to support the program. Pizza on a Stick

1 13.8 ounce package refrigerated pizza dough

Flour, for dusting

1 cup marinara sauce

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

3/4 cup chopped pepperoni, black olives and/or mushrooms

Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing

2 cloves garlic, minced

Pinch of dried oregano

Pinch of red pepper flakes

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll out the pizza dough on lightly floured surface into a 12 by 16 inch rectangle. Cut into 6 by 8 inch quarters, then cut each quarter in half diagonally to make 8 triangles.

Brush each triangle of dough with marinara sauce, leaving a 1/2 inch border all around; sprinkle with mozzarella and parmesan (reserve some of the sauce and cheese for topping).  Layer a few pieces of pepperoni, olives and/or mushrooms over the cheese, reserving a few pieces for topping. Slightly fold in the two far corners, then roll up the dough from the long side, like a burrito, until the filling is fully enclosed in a tube, pressing gently to seal.

Carefully insert a popsicle stick or wooden skewer into the center of each pizza roll and arrange on the prepared baking sheets. Brush the rolls with olive oil and more marinara sauce; sprinkle with garlic, oregano and red pepper flakes. Press any extra filling ingredients onto the rolls. Sprinkle with more mozzarella and parmesan. Bake until golden, about 20 minutes.
