Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” come to Medina

Mark Dawidziak, the TV and entertainment critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, will bring his theatre group, The Largely Literary Company, to Medina to perform Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” as a benefit fundraiser for the Medina AAUW Scholarship program.  The performance will be held at 2pm on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 317 E. Liberty St, Medina.

Dawidziak plays Charles Dickens as well as a number of secondary roles.  His wife, Sara Showman and local performer Tom Stephan are the other two actors in the 90-minute faithful adaptation of Dickens’ classic tale.  The production is performed with minimal props on a simple set that never changes.  The skilled actors, playing multiple roles, allow us to see “everything from Marley’s face on Scrooge’s doorknocker when he wraps his ghostly chains around Scrooge’s wrists”.  The Company has toured this program in Northeast Ohio area for nine years but this is the first performance in Medina County.

Tickets are $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for students 10 years of age and up.  The show is not advised for children under 10.  Call 330.723.3355 for ticket information.

History Corner The Johnson House

by Roger L. Havens

The Johnson Historic House, as it is known today, was built around 1852 in the Vemacular Federal Architect Style.  Henry J. Travis had the house built across the street from his carriage factory (1838) located just north of the Grace Lutheran Church.  The main part of this home has a barn stone foundation with stones two foot in thickness.  Poplar trees were cut down and the logs now serve as floor joists.  Some of the bark remains on the logs and can be seen in the basement.

Mr. H.J. Travis sold his carriage factory and moved his business close to Chicago.  The house went up for sale and was purchased by Reverend Thomas W. Browning.  He preached in the Methodist Church and the Congregational Church (St. Mark’s today).  He was the mayor of Wadsworth from 1869-1872 and again from 1876-1880.  He lived in the house until 1877.

Dr. Daniel E. Cranz purchased the house and practiced medicine out of the home.  This was his office for sixteen years.  He was an investor in the Wadsworth Salt Company.

The next occupant of the house was Dr. Thomas Jefferson Ritter.  He operated his practice out of the house from 1893-1900.

Dr. Robert Johnson was one of the last country doctors in the area.  He began his practice at age 22 in the year 1900.  He made his round on horse and buggy.  In 1906, at age 28, he became mayor of Wadsworth and served two terms.  During his service, he was instrumental in getting the main streets paved with brick and he drove the last spike that connected the Inter-urban rail downtown to West Barberton.

Dr. Johnsons’ daughter, Dr. Myra Johnson, was the last person to reside and operate a doctor’s office in the house.  She began practicing the year her father passed in 1952 and eventually retired in 1975.  She passed in 1996 and the City of Wadsworth purchased the house for demolition.  A group of concerned citizens lobbied for its preservation.  They were successful in their efforts and renovations began in the early 2000’s.  The original wrought iron fence was recently installed to help bring back the grandeur of the property.

1 (1 pound) package sliced bacon

2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 cup water

1 whole orange, unpeeled, seeds removed and chopped fine

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 cup crushed pineapple, drained

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Grown Up Ham and Cheese Finger Sandwiches

1/2 cup water

3 tablespoons cider vinegar

1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar

1/2 small red onion, very thinly sliced

8 slices thin white bread

Extra-virgin olive oil

1 large or 2 small green apples

4 to 6 ounces aged Gouda cheese

1 tablespoon Dijon or whole grain mustard, apple butter of chutney

1/2 bunch watercress

8 thin slices prosciutto

Freshly cracked black pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Bring water, vinegar and brown sugar to a boil.  Add the onions and remove from the heat.  Cover and set aside until onions come to room temperature.  Trim the crusts off the bread and cut the bread into thirds, for three rectangles per piece.  Lightly brush both sides of the bread pieces with olive oil and lay out on a baking sheet.  Toast in the oven until just crisp and lightly brown, about five minutes.  Cool.

To assembly: quarter, core and very thinly slice the apple.  Very thinly slice the cheese into triangles or shards that will fit nicely on the bread.  Place a dab or smear the mustard on the bread.  Place a piece of apple, cheese and 1 or 2 sprigs of watercress on each piece of toasted bread.  Wrap a small piece of prosciutto around each stack to make a neat package.  Top with a little bit of the pickled onions, a drizzle of olive oil and freshly cracked black pepper.  Serve at room temperature.
