Volkswalk May 22nd Medina, Ohio
The walk is from 9am-12noon. Registration is at Root Candles at West Liberty, 623 W Liberty St, Medina, OH 44256. There will be a 10K (about 6 miles) and a 5K (about 3 miles).
So you are asking what is a volkswalk? It is a fun walk set up by a local volkssport club which is a part of the American Volksport Association. The AVA was founded in 1979 as a non-profit, tax exempt, national organization dedicated to the promotion of the benefits of health and physical fitness for people of all ages. The AVA promotes physical fitness by sponsoring, through its affiliate clubs, non-competitive sports events in save, stress-free environments. What is volkssporting? It is an organized event, a walk, bike, swim or cross country ski designed to appeal to everyone. Events are non-competitive, and participants exercise at their own pace. Most volkssports events are walks that are 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in length; however, the distance varies depending on the event. The clubs select the trail for safety, scenic interest, historic areas, natural beauty and walk ability. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the walk. For more information on the Volkswalk in Medina, call 330.466.8799.
Walks are set up with a map provided for the walkers to easily follow the route and enjoy the area the walk is showcasing. You do not have to be a member of AVA to enjoy the walk. Just come out and have fun, get some exercise and enjoy the people and the community. If you have the interest to learn more about Volkssports or to get a patch or medal to show you have done the walk, you can do so by registering at the events registration table. The website for the American Volkssport Association is www.ava.org (go to walking events).

Western Reserve Studied for National Designation
Congressman Tim Ryan introduced legislation to conduct a study on the feasibility of a Western Reserve Heritage Area. Like the coordination of national heritage areas themselves, the study is the responsibility of those living in the proposed area. For that reason a local committee of more than twenty (20) individuals, representing every county and many different interest, including resource conservation, economic development, city management, community planning and tourism are working with the National Park Service to complete the study. The study will then be presented to Congress to review and determine if the designation will be granted.
National Heritage Areas celebrate and interpret unique natural, historical, recreational and cultural resources and traditions of a region. Working in partnership with private, local and state partners, National Heritage Areas are coordinated by the local people and organizations.
Some of the benefits of a National Heritage Area Designation are:
· Preserve stories, cultures and natural resources
· Provide economic stimulus
· Enhances opportunities for education and inspiration
· Fosters community pride
Among the questions that will be asked during the study are the following:
1. Does the region want designation as a national heritage area?
2. What are the compelling stories that define the Western Reserve?
A very important component of this study is the following questionnaire. The questions are geared to get both the public’s ideas and thoughts and also to show the public’s involvement in the project. The questionnaire will only take a short time to fill out but please give some thought to your answers. Please click here for the questions, answer and then forward them on to Rory Robinson. His address or email is on the bottom of the form.
For more information and to share your thoughts and ideas, visit the projects website at westernreserve.ning.com
