Visit Medina County

2010 June Newsletter

Camping

Summer is almost here and summer means it is time for camping. Break out the tent or air out the camper and take a drive to one of our seven member campgrounds here in Medina County. Our campgrounds offer great relaxing get-away weekends, nice week long vacation or an all summer get-away location for the family.

The campgrounds are full service offering seasonal and overnight sites, full service and primitive sites, some have cabins or group camping area for camping clubs or family reunions. They offer hook-ups, pull through sites, pavilions, showers and restrooms.

For fun, the campgrounds provide different types of programs for their campers, dances, bands, fun activities, swimming, fishing, sports areas, game rooms and more. Of course, one of everyone’s favorite things is the campfire. There is nothing like sitting around the campfire telling tales, eating smores and, of course, a ghost story or two. So come on out and enjoy our campgrounds, then visit all the other fun things to see and do in our community.

Here is a list of the member campgrounds in Medina County:  Honey-Do Campground, Spencer; Maple Lakes Campground, Seville; Pier-Lon Park, Medina; Shawnee Lake Park, Spencer; Sunset Lake Campground, Spencer; Wild Wood Lakes, Homerville and Willow Lake Park, Brunswick.

Treasures

Spring is coming to an end and summer is almost upon us. Everyone has been doing their spring cleaning (well, most people; somehow that never happened at my house, again). Spring cleaning, of course, means cleaning closets, basements and store rooms. Following cleaning there are all those great items that have been stashed away – what do to with them? Summer brings yard, porch and garage sales where all those discarded items are put out just waiting to be found by the one person who has been looking just for that piece or the person looking for a great deal.

Several towns in Medina County offer community wide yard sales where one can walk from home to home looking for collectibles, deals and the one item that must be had.  Coming up in June is

Wadsworth’s Treasure Hunt on June 11th and 12th.

Seville’s World’s Largest Yard Sale is June 18th and 19th.

There are several other sales and flea markets for all of the treasure hunters of the world:

June 5:  On-site Flea Market at Willow Lake Park, Brunswick (330.225.6580)

June 17-20:  11th Annual Yard & Barn Sale, sponsored by Forgotten Animal Shelter (330.769.1323)

June 26:  Litchfield Flea Market, Litchfield Circle Park (330.722.7154)

June 27:  Medina Flea Market, Community Center at the Fairgrounds (330.948.4300) (Other dates are July 18, August 15, September 19, October 24, November 21 and December 19).

Every Sunday weather permitting Flea Market at Blue Sky Drive-in, Wadsworth (330.334.1809)

Every Saturday and Sunday and Tuesdays Flea Market at –S- Litchfield Storage/Flea Market (330.635.8249)

            (Call individual event for information).

So plan your schedule around these dates and visit Medina County to find your treasure!

Northern Ohio Railway Museum to offer Guided Walking Tours

Have you ever wondered what a 45 ton OX or a 60ft Flexible Flyer looks like? How about a Breezer from Brazil or a Half-Witt from Canada? And finally what’s the story about Leapin’ Lena? All the answers about these historic railcars can be found waiting for you at Northern Ohio Railway Museum. Starting Saturdays, May 22 to October 30, 10am to 4pm, guided walking tours will be conducted. Admission is free, donations accepted.

The Museum is located at 5515 Buffham Road in Seville, Medina County, Ohio, near Chippewa Lake. From the I-71/I-76/224 interchange, take 224 west 4/10 of a mile to County Road 19 (Lake Road). Turn right (north) on Lake and go 6/10 of a mile to Buffham Road. Turn right (east) on Buffham and go 1 mile. The museum will then be on your left.

On the tour, visitors will see a diversified collection of streetcars, interurbans, and rapid transit equipment from this region. The oldest trolley car in the collection dates back to 1895. It was purchased by an area trolley tycoon that later became a famous Cleveland mayor. See the equipment that built and maintained the streetcar system. Learn the story of how photographers and dancers permitted these utilitarian cars to serve their employer in ways their designers never imagined. The story of trolley freight is told through the rare artifacts. Discover how the interurban became the farmer’s friend. See the last wooden interurban to leave Cleveland as well as the only operable piece of equipment from the Cleveland Union Terminal Railroad. Learn how a sleepy streetcar line built to promote real estate, morphed into a pioneer rapid transit line that still operates today. Finally see a 1970 rapid car that served the first Airport Rapid Transit Line in the western hemisphere. Many other fascinating stories abound at the museum and can be found on the tour.

New this year are several cars and items from the former Trolleyville U.S.A. collection. See the OX, the only restored car from the interurban that once served Cleveland, Akron and Canton. This car in later years, when in service on the Shaker Rapid, brought Santa to Shaker Square for the holiday lighting ceremony. See one of the best preserved Cleveland streetcars in existence, #1225. Many other new items are on the tour.

A unique feature of the tour is a visit to the restoration shop. See how these grand treasures of our past are painstakingly disassembled and restored to like-new condition by skilled craftsmen and women. At present several projects are underway in varying stages of completion. Conditions permitting, you will have the opportunity to see the restoration underway and have the work being done explained.

The museum is supported by donations from its members and the general public. Donations for the continued development of the museum are needed and can be sent to: Northern Ohio Railway Museum, P.O. Box 458, Chippewa Lake, Ohio 44215-0458. The museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational corporation. All donations are tax-exempt.

The Northern Ohio Railway Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, restore, display and operate streetcars and other electric railway equipment for the education and enjoyment of the public. The museum owns forty-two acres of land in southern Medina County, including two miles of the former Cleveland and Southwestern interurban railroad. At this site the museum has built over a mile of track and three large buildings to house its collection of historic trolleys, interurbans and rapid transit cars, most from the Northern Ohio area. Five pieces of the collection have been restored and others are currently being restored.

In addition to the public tours, the museum has speakers available for civic and other community groups, and an education program for area schools. For further information on these public service programs, contact the museum at 330.769.5501 or visit our web site at www.northernohio.railway.museum.

Music to My Ears

Whether you like classical or rock, visit Medina’s Public Square on Friday nights. Starting Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, music will be a part of the Friday night events on the Square. On May 28th, the first 2010 Rally in the Alley will kick-off the summer with the Howling Cat Trio and the opening band will be Buffalo Rose. The rally is held in the alley behind Main Street Café every Friday night from 5:30pm until 11pm.  The opening bands start at 5:30pm with the main bands kicking off at 7:30pm.  There will be a break at 8:30pm and continuing at 9:30pm.

The concert series host, Main Street Café, will offer a special small plate menu with everything under $5.00 on Rally nights. So come to Medina Square for dinner and a concert.

The alley is a good venue for great sound and the ability to get close to the stage. Many of the bands are tribute bands so bring your friends every Friday night for a fun night out with good food and music. To see what bands are playing, go to www.themainstreetcafe.com.  There is no charge except for the Labor Day weekend concerts on September 3-5, 2010.

For those who love classical, popular and marches, the Medina Community Band will begin their concert series June 4, 2010 under the baton of Marcus Neiman. The concerts are held every Friday night in June and July except for the July 4th week. The concert for that week is held on the day of July 4th. Concerts are at 8:30pm (weather permitting) and all are free. Concerts are sponsored by the Medina Kiwanis Breakfast Club.

The Medina Community Band has presented summer concerts since 1859. Its concept is simple, a group of local people get together to perform for the community to provide entertainment. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a summer evening in the park with great music and an Ice Cream Social.

Recipes

The following recipes are from a cookbook, “Treasured Ohio Recipes” printed in September, 2000 from various Ohio Convention and Visitors Bureaus staff, their friends and families.  The book was put together by the Ohio Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (OACVB).  Our hope is that you try a few of the recipes we include in our Newsletters.

Strawberry Salad

1 quart fresh strawberries

5 not-too-ripe bananas, sliced

1 regular can pineapple chunks, drained

1 bag prepared strawberry glaze

Clean and slice strawberries; place in 2-quart serving bowl. Add drained pineapple and sliced bananas. Add glaze and stir through to cover. Refrigerate and serve chilled.

Light Asparagus Soup

1 pound asparagus, chopped

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 medium onion, diced

2 celery stalks, diced

1 medium potato, diced

1 to 1 1/2 cups vegetable stock or chicken broth

1/4 teaspoon tarragon

1/2 teaspoon parsley

1/4 teaspoon rosemary

1 cup skim milk

Dash of salt and pepper

In a large soup pot, sauté onions and celery until tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Add asparagus, potato, salt, pepper and herbs; then add enough vegetable stock to cover the vegetables. Bring to a boil; lower heat and simmer 25 to 30 minutes, until vegetables are tender. Puree vegetables in small batches. Add skim milk and heat through on medium heat. Serve immediately with a garnish of seasoned croutons and slice of lemon. Hint: For a thicker soup, remove 1/2 cup of mixture and whisk in 1 tablespoon flour. Return this mixture to soup and cook, stirring constantly until thickened.
