History Museums

Medina County, a part of the Connecticut Western Reserve Area of Ohio, has a proud rich history documented by many community historical societies. Some are housed in historical buildings offering a glimpse into our past. We also are privileged to have a wonderful museum, the Medina Toy & Train Museum located on Medina's Public Square.

Open for tours by appointment. Bluegrass in the barn first Sun of the month 2pm-4pm May-Aug. Restored 1860s small Ohio family farm includes house, privy, garage, corn crib, granary, equipment shed, barn, milk house and chicken house. Kitchen garden to 1900. Admission is free, donations gratefully accepted. Visit our web site for information on special events.

The Society operates the Chatham Historical Museum at 6332 Avon Lake Rd and the Chatham School Museum at 6300 Avon Lake Rd, Chatham, OH, 330.667,2276. Call for special events. Meets on the 4th Mon of Jan, Feb, May, Aug, Sep and Nov at the Chatham School Museum. Dedicated to studying, preserving and displaying the history and artifacts of Chatham Township. Annual Flea Market June 22, 2013.

Apr-Oct open first Sat of the month 1pm-3pm or by appointment. The Society maintains the Underwood Library and The Thompson Work Museum. The library contains historical reference materials, township information, Indian artifacts and genealogical records. The home contains period furniture and a doll collection.

Open Tue from 9am-5pm (call ahead to confirm), also on first Sun of each month 1pm-4pm except Jan & Feb. Visitors are taken back to the Victorian era, when the John Smart House was built, through beautiful furnishings and vintage clothing exhibits. Enjoy special displays plus permanent Civil War, pioneer and native American tools, projectile points and arrowhead displays. See the boots, helmet and a life-sized photomural of the Giants of Seville - Martin and Anna Bates. Also a Genealogical Research site.

The Litchfield Historical Society "on the circle" in Litchfield encourages group tours of our 1846 restored and furnished Greek revival house. Open by appointment only. Call 330.722.7154, 330.667.2534 or 330.667.1060. Meets 3rd Mon of each month at 7:30pm.

Home of the 1916 Hallock Chemical Fire Truck built in Medina. Collection includes hand and horse drawn fire equipment from 1850, newer vehicles, extinguishers, nozzles, pumps, bells, helmets, Gamewell alarm equipment, fire grenades, and historic photos. Open most Saturdays (call to confirm hours) or by appointment. Free admission. Educational fun for the whole family. We look forward to meeting you. A non-profit special interest organization which provides historical information related to the village of Lodi and surrounding Harrisville Township. Regular quarterly meetings held the fourth Thu at 7pm in Jan, Apr, Jul and Oct. Learn about streetcars, interurbans and rapid transit equipment from Ohio built between 1895 and 1970 on a docent guided walking tour.  Includes a visit to the restoration shop.  See how these grand treasures of our past are painstakingly restored to like-new condition by skilled craftsmen.  Conditions permitting, you will have the opportunity to see the restoration underway and hae the work being done explained.  Admission is free, contributions gratefully accepted.  In addition to the public tours, the museum has speakers available for community groups.
